New MCS1

THIEL Audio announces their newest Coherent Source® loudspeaker, the MCS1. The MCS1 is a three-way, high performance, multichannel speaker system designed for very realistic sound reproduction in home video and music sound systems. The MCS1 is magnetically shielded for use as a very high performance, dedicated center-channel speaker or wherever shielding is required.

New low distortion, high output drivers

The new MCS1 uses a pair of newly designed, very low distortion, high output, metal diaphragm 6.5-inch woofers, and THIEL's unique coaxially mounted midrange/tweeter array in which both drivers share the same voice coil. The dual port cabinet is built with a 3-inch thick front baffle, 1-inch thick cabinet walls, and is internally braced to reduce unwanted vibration, improving clarity and spatial performance. The sculpted, three-dimensional baffle's shape reduces diffraction effects, also improving transient and spatial performance.

The two THIEL-designed woofers' short coil/long gap, copper stabilized motor systems, "greatly reduce distortion," says designer Jim Thiel. "The woofers' large magnets improve efficiency and increase output capability, desirable performance features for today's home theater systems." The woofers' reinforced metal diaphragms result in outstanding tonal response.

The midrange/tweeter driver array's innovative structure utilizes a mechanical crossover between the midrange and tweeter diaphragms that allows the elimination of the usual electrical crossover network. The coaxial driver mounting results in perfect time coherence regardless of listener position, improving imaging and transient fidelity. The design of the mechanical crossover contributes to the speaker's improved phase coherence and uniform frequency response.

Time and phase coherent design

As with all THIEL loudspeakers, the MCS1 utilizes a synthesized first-order crossover system to eliminate phase distortion. The coaxial midrange/tweeter drivers are center-mounted between the two woofers to provide time coherence regardless of listener position or whether the cabinet is oriented vertically or horizontally.

Specifications include a frequency response of ±2 dB from 50 Hz to 20 kHz (47 Hz to 23 kHz, -3 dB bandwidth), a sensitivity of 90 dB @ 2.8 V-1m, phase response within ±10° of minimum, and a 4 ohm nominal impedance. The cabinet's dimensions are 10 inches wide, 12.25 inches deep, and 28.5 inches tall.

New SCS3

U.S. loudspeaker manufacturer, THIEL Audio, announces a new Coherent Source® multichannel loudspeaker, the SCS3. The SCS3 is a versatile, two-way, bookshelf-sized speaker system designed for outstanding reproduction in home video and music sound systems regardless of listener position or speaker location. The SCS3 is magnetically shielded for use as a high performance, dedicated center-channel speaker or wherever shielding is required.

"The SCS3's magnetic shielding, narrow shape, and very accurate reproduction make it ideal for use as a center or rear channel speaker in home theater systems, " says company president Kathy Gornik. "However, the SCS3 is a remarkable all-purpose, full-range speaker as comfortable in demanding music systems as it is reproducing movie soundtracks. It's design follows our philosophy that the best speaker for video sound is designed with the same performance goals we have for music-only reproduction."

All new coaxially mounted drivers

The SCS3 uses a newly designed, very low distortion, high output, metal diaphragm

6.5-inch woofer that is coaxially mounted with a new 1-inch, high output metal dome tweeter, the same high performance tweeter that is used in THIEL's flagship model, CS7.2. The dual port cabinet is built with a 2-inch thick front baffle, 1-inch thick cabinet walls, and is internally braced to reduce unwanted vibration, improving clarity and spatial performance. The sculpted, three-dimensional baffle's shape reduces diffraction effects, also improving transient and spatial performance.

The new THIEL-designed woofer's short coil/long gap, copper stabilized motor system reduces distortion, and the woofer's' large magnet improves efficiency and increases output capability to meet the needs of today's home theater systems. The woofer's reinforced metal diaphragm is specially shaped to act as a waveguide for the tweeter's energy. The shape reduces diffraction, a common problem with other coaxial designs.

Time and phase coherent design

As with all THIEL loudspeakers, the SCS3 utilizes a phase correct crossover system to eliminate phase distortion. The coaxial midrange/tweeter mounting provides perfect time coherence regardless of listener position or whether the cabinet is oriented vertically or horizontally. "The SCS3's time and phase coherence and coaxially mounted, low distortion drivers provide a very high level of clarity and realism for all types of sound reproduction," says product designer Jim Thiel.

Specifications include a frequency response of ±2 dB from 48 Hz to 20 kHz (46 Hz to 22 kHz, -3 dB bandwidth), a sensitivity of 87 dB @ 2.8 V-1m, phase response within ±10° of minimum, and a 4 ohm nominal impedance. The cabinet's dimensions are 7.5 inches wide, 10 inches deep, and 19 inches tall.
